Welcome

Healthier smile, healthier planet

Earth Day 2026, taking place on 22 April, is the perfect opportunity to reflect on how even the smallest everyday habits can make a meaningful difference to our planet. One area that often goes overlooked? The bathroom cupboard.

Oral care products have long been associated with plastic waste, and the items we rely on to keep our teeth clean can carry a hidden environmental impact.

The hidden impact of oral care waste

In the UK alone, millions of toothbrushes, floss picks and other dental accessories end up in landfill each year. Traditional dental floss is usually made from petroleum-based nylon, which can take up to 80 years to break down and often finds its way into waterways rather than being properly disposed of.

On a global scale, approximately 11 million metric tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans annually, with oral care products contributing to the problem.

Small changes, big difference

Earth Day is all about taking positive action for the health of our planet. This year, DenTek is shining a light on how small changes to daily oral care routines can support that mission. Its eco range is designed to make it easier for consumers to choose products that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

A shared responsibility for sustainability

Jennifer Hudson, European Marketing Manager at DenTek, explains:
“Sustainability awareness is one of the most important steps brands can take right now. As an industry, we share a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact. Consumers are increasingly mindful of how their purchasing decisions affect the planet, and they expect brands to reflect those values. It’s essential to us that our customers never feel they have to choose between the health of their teeth and the health of the environment.”

Innovating beyond plastic

In recent years, DenTek has taken significant steps to reduce single-use plastic across its interdental range. As an alternative, the brand uses a bio-resin derived from sugar cane to produce the handles of its floss picks and interdental brushes. This renewable material can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional plastic production.

Additionally, all outer packaging in the eco range is made from fully recyclable FSC-certified cardboard or contains at least 30% recycled material—and is 100% recyclable***.

“The production of dental hygiene products presents unique challenges,” Jennifer continues. “While using recycled plastic may seem like the most obvious solution, it isn’t always the most sustainable option. There are more planet-friendly alternatives available—we just need to think differently. While initial costs may be higher, the long-term benefits are both environmental and financial.”

A simple switch for a healthier future

Switching to DenTek’s eco range may feel like a small change, but collectively these choices can have a significant impact. This Earth Day, making a difference could start with something as simple as a floss pick. Because a healthier world really can begin with a healthier smile.
